Shamrock Hair Slide

It’s Paddy’s day on Thursday and thank goodness for it too, we certainly can’t rely on the Irish weather to cheer us up so we may as well have a day of smiling, drinking and laughing with friends and family :)

To get us in an even more cheerful mood I put together a little tutorial on how to make your own Shamrock Accessory. I hope you like it and give it a go…

It can be worn in your hair…

…or as a brooch.

What you will need:

• Green Fabric (I used some hand dyed fabric I had)
• Scissors
• Needle and Decorative Embroidery Thread (I choose gold)
• Lace Fabric
• Hair slide
• Pen/Pencil
• Paper

Step 1: Cut two 5inch squares from the green fabric and one 5inch square from the lace. Then sandwich the lace between the two green fabrics as shown below.

Step 2: Pin the fabrics together around the outer edges of the square to secure.

Step 3: Draw or print out a shamrock shape onto paper and cut out (make sure it fits into your square).

Then draw around it with a pencil or pen onto your fabric.

Step 4: With your needle and thread begin stitching from the stem of the shamrock silhouette…

…and work your way around keeping on the pencil line.

Step 6: When you have completed stitching remove the pins. Then as close to the stitch as you can, cut away the top fabric all the way around.

Do the same with the bottom fabric until you are left with only the shamrock and lace.

Step 7: Now to finish cut the lace about a cm from the shamrock all the way around.

All you have to do now is stitch two smallish stitches at the back of the shamrock…

…not too tight and not too lose so you can slide you hair grip through, and you are done!!

Now all you have to do is decide whether to wear it in your hair or as a brooch. If you do make one, send me a link so I can see… :)  Enjoy!!!
